This is from a marvelous book, "Magic: Stage Illusions and Scientific Diversions Including Trick Photography" by Albert A. Hopkins and published in 1911, a little after Joseph Grimaldi (1778-1837). The book has about 400 similar illustrations and this one appears on page 49 of the original publication. The book has been reprinted in recent decades and is well worth tracking down.

Cheers Dick, thanks for that. I've added it to my Amazon wishlist and will get it as soon as I can. Peter
